NRUTYANGANA * CHANDRIKA

Nrutyangana-Chandrika-Kimiko YanagidaOdissi dance troup “Chandrika” was established at Osaka, Japan in 1995 by Kimiko Yanagida. This best Odissi dance school Japan was inspired by one of the best Odissi dance school IndiaNrutyangana’. Now Chandrika has 50 members at Osaka, Kobe and Tokyo. Members of Chandrika have performed n major cities in Japan like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nana, Kobe, Nagoya Fukuoka etc and participated in many occasions like the 50th Anniversary of Indo-Japan diplomatic relations 2003, Dance festival in Yamaguchi University 2005, Asia Music Festival 2007, The Silk Road Symposium 2007, Dance Festival “IMAGES” in Hope University Michigian USA 2007 etc.

Chandrika had invited Guru Suabash Chandra Swain form India for special workshop in Osaka, Japan. Chandrika has many programs organized by India consulate, Osaka. Chandrika contributes to understanding India culture including Odissi in Japan.


Kimiko Yanagida Profile:

Educational Qualificaton

B.A. in Educational science from the National Nara Women’s University, Majoring in dance aesthetics.

Lecture in the National Women’s University. (Indian Consulate)

Training Undergone

  • Training in the basic of western classical ballet for 12 years from a tender age.
  • Training in contemporary dance & choreography dance & choreography for 4 years in Nara Women’s university.
  • 5 years training under Guru Hare Krishna Behera (Delhi) in Odissi.
  • 11 years of rigorous training under Guru Subash Chandra Swain (Orissa) in Odissi. Developing the finer nuances of this art from and vastly enriching one’s technique as well as repertoire. This training continues.

Performances in Japan

  • Lecture & Demonstration at the National Ethnology Museum, Osaka in 200 and at the National Nara Museum in 2003.
  • Dance dedication at Ise Jingu Shrine and Tenkawa Jinjya Shrine (2007).
  • Performances given at principal temples in Japan such as Todaiji-temple.
  • Toshodaiji-temple (Nara), Tsukijihonganji-temple (Tokyo).

Performances in India

  • Performance for Oriya Doordarshan (National Broadcasting in India) in 1996 & 2000.
  • Performance at Rabindra Bharati University (Kolkata) in 2001.
  • Performance at Bhartya Bhasha Parishad (Kolkata) in 2001.
  • Performance at International Odissi festival in 2006.

Performances in other countries

  • Performance at Asian pacific week Berlin 2003 by invitation from the Tagore-Einstain Council, Germany.
  • Hope University in U.S.A.
