Odissi dates back to the second century BC, as documented in stone sculptures/inscriptions of “Rani Gumpha” at Udyagiri. However, it blossomed as a vibrant temple dance between 11th and 15th century AD, performed by ‘Devdasis’ referred to as ‘Maharis’ with patronage around Lord Jaganatha temple, Puri. Different lively sculptures in Lord Jaganath Temple, Konark Temple & several other temples bear testimony to the popular dance by male dancers (Gotipuas) in 17th & 18th century AD. After independence, Odissi got recognized as one of the classical dance forms of India with a distinct fine part repertoire. Soft & lyrical, odissi is distinctly feminine and strongly permitted by ‘Bhakti Shringar’.Odissi Performances are usually based on the popular devotion to lord Krishna & to Orissa’s most popular deity, Lord Jaganath.

Verses of the Sanskrit play ‘Geet Govinda’ Composed by 12th century poet, Jayadeve, are used to depict divine love. Though, it is based on ‘Lasyas’ but continuous infusion of ‘tandavs’ have lent unique balance. It encompasses both Nritta & Nrutya. Chauka & Trivanga lead grace to the feminine charm. By combining dimension of Angika, Bachika, Aharya & Satwika, Odissi rightfully claims to be a complete dance style. Simple traditional sarees with blazing borders offsets the gracious ensemble.
